Yang Lee
Tattoo Master
Yang Lee first encountered tattoo art in 2005, and over the next decade, he grew from knowing nothing about tattoos to becoming a professional tattoo artist. Tattooing has allowed him to stay true to himself, balancing reality and ideals without compromising his artistic vision for material concerns.
Before pursuing this career, he studied various artistic mediums such as drawing, photography, and sketching, which now greatly benefit his tattoo work. he believe a strong foundation in art is essential for creating exceptional tattoos. Over the years, he’ve expanded from a small wooden shop with limited space and resources to a comfortable, well-equipped studio, thanks to relentless effort and the trust and support of his clients. Their belief in him has been the cornerstone of his growth and success.
For him, tattoos are a powerful expression of self-confidence, serving as a personal statement or a meaningful reminder of life’s journey. He’ve worked on many unique projects, from commemorative pieces to tattoos with profound personal significance, like inscribing contact information for a child with disabilities or an elderly person. He’ve embraced a variety of styles, including Oriental, watercolor, tribal, and cartoon tattoos, as exploring different genres inspires growth and creativity in my work.
Through international tattoo conventions and exchanges, he’ve gained valuable insights and strengthened his commitment to elevating tattoo art in Malaysia, where the market is niche due to cultural and religious factors. Looking ahead, he hope to use tattoo art to promote positive perceptions, support charitable causes, and inspire a new generation of artists to pursue their dreams with courage and passion.
Yang Lee first encountered the art of tattooing in 2005. Over ten years, he transitioned from having no understanding of tattoos to becoming a professional tattoo artist. This profession has allowed me to be true to himself and find a balance between reality and ideals in society without compromising his artistic principles for material concerns.
Before pursuing a career in tattooing, he had studied various artistic mediums, such as basic drawing, photography, and sketching. The foundational skills he gained from these studies have significantly benefited his tattooing career. Therefore, he believe that creating outstanding tattoos requires a solid foundation in art.
In the beginning, he operated out of a small wooden hut. Through continuous effort and perseverance, he finally managed to establish a two-story studio. Thinking back to those days in the tiny wooden hut, the workspace was very cramped, and even going to the restroom meant walking to the food court’s restroom next door. He still remember how, whenever it rained heavily, the shop would leak and experience power outages because the roof was made of wooden planks and ATAP leaves. Looking back, it must have been quite inconvenient for our customers back then, and he is truly grateful to them. Their support motivated him to keep striving, and now he can finally provide a comfortable and well-equipped studio for everyone.
Back in those early days, space was so limited that he couldn’t offer customers a spacious area for tattooing. Now, with a larger shop, he can provide a more comfortable environment for our clients, which has also helped expand our customer base. These memories remind me of how far he’ve come.
During this journey, aside from his own continuous hard work and dedication, it is also thanks to the trust and unwavering support of our customers that the entire team has been able to operate smoothly and achieve the success he have today.
For him, tattoos are a form of self-expression that exudes confidence. Some people choose to stand out by wearing beautiful clothes, while others choose to adorn their skin with patterns and colors. Both are ways of expressing oneself and pursuing individuality—neither is right nor wrong; it simply depends on personal preference. Some customers want tattoos to motivate themselves or to commemorate certain people or events. he once tattooed a mentally challenged teenager and an elderly man with memory loss. They both requested tattoos with their family’s contact numbers and home addresses.
ADD ON: So, do most customers get tattoos just because they look good? Are there more unique customers whose tattoos carry deep personal meaning? For instance, like the elderly man who wanted his address tattooed. Or perhaps other special cases you’ve encountered?
ADD ON: Types of tattoos: tribal, watercolor, Japanese style, oriental style, and even cartoon-inspired tattoos are popular now. (The more details you provide, the more content he can use to showcase your shop’s work, including examples of the various styles and designs your studio has done.)
There are many types of tattoos, including: model tribal, traditional tribal, black & grey tattoos, color tattoos, Western-style designs, Eastern-style designs, cartoon tattoos, biomechanical tattoos, and more. Personally, his favorite is Eastern-style color tattoos, but he never limit myself to a specific type of tattoo work. Exploring different styles allows me to discover more about myself and create unique pieces to present to everyone. This journey lets my work evolve and improve at different stages.
Inspiration
Each of his works is usually inspired by the richness of his life. Sometimes, he read books or listen to various types of music, which are great ways to spark inspiration for his designs.
Tattoo Process
The process largely depends on the tattoo artist’s personal style. Some artists prefer to pre-draw the design on paper and transfer it onto the client’s skin before tattooing. Others may directly sketch freehand on the client’s body before tattooing. Personally, he use both methods depending on the type of tattoo. For more intricate and detailed designs, he usually opt for the transfer method.
Hygiene and Standards
There are key aspects to pay attention to during the tattooing process. First, all needles and pigments used must be single-use and never reused. The tools and environment in the studio must be thoroughly sterilized to ensure hygiene. Additionally, the tattoo artist’s style and design should align with their own aesthetic preferences. While it’s essential to meet the client’s requirements, the artist must also maintain their own standards to deliver a high-quality piece. It’s not about blindly following instructions but finding the right balance between the client’s vision and the artist’s expertise.
Yang Lee have participated in several international tattoo competitions and won some awards. Many people focus solely on the results of these competitions, overlooking the true meaning and journey behind them. For him, the process and effort leading up to the competition are the most important, as they are moments worth remembering and being grateful for. This journey taught him how to face challenges without fear and stay true to his dreams. Holding on to this belief has helped me develop a positive mindset to overcome the various obstacles he’ve encountered in his career. Along the way, he’ve come to understand myself better, and the people who have supported and helped him are the greatest driving force behind his determination to keep moving toward his goals.
Tattoo Culture in Asia
In many Asian countries, tattooing is becoming increasingly popular. More people are beginning to embrace this art form, and tattoos are often featured as themes in movies and TV shows. However, the tattoo industry in Malaysia is still considered a niche business. With a predominantly Muslim population, where tattoos are not permitted in Islamic teachings, the tattoo market here is significantly smaller compared to other countries. Perhaps only about 40% of the population is open to tattoos. In this environment, Malaysian tattoo artists must remain steadfast and united to elevate the art of tattooing in our country to an internationally recognized level through distinctive and unique expressions.
Cultural Exchange
He’ve had the opportunity to travel abroad to exchange ideas and techniques with tattoo artists from different countries. These exchanges allow us to share our works and experiences, helping everyone appreciate and understand art inspired by various cultural backgrounds.
Passion Beyond Tattoos
Besides tattooing, I am deeply passionate about other forms of art, such as music and leathercraft. Through art, he aim to gain more insights into life and its values. He firmly believe in the spirit of “lifelong learning” and strive to continue growing and evolving.
Future Goals
My dream is to promote tattoo art in the most positive way, helping the public gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of this skin-embedded art form. In the future, he hope to use tattoo art to participate in charitable activities, providing aid to those in need. He also aspire to pass on my tattooing skills and knowledge to young people who are passionate about and interested in pursuing this art form. By doing so, he hope to contribute to the future success and recognition of Malaysia’s tattoo industry.
A Word of Encouragement
To those who, like me, have dreams yet to be fulfilled, he want to say:
“Life is a journey with time limits and numerous obstacles. Often, we must adapt to the events and challenges at different stages of life to hold steadfast to our beliefs and gain clarity about what we truly want. Many people like to use their own perspectives to mock or discourage those chasing their dreams. Don’t let a single comment from someone else make you give up on your dream. Keep going, and you will find your way.”
